The early days and Dale Chihuly

Dale Chihuly my fellow Glass Artist

My fellow artist Dale Chihuly has taken notice of my work which has inspired him during the early years. Notably, back then in the sixties, it was the first place that Chihuly had meaningful social contact with other artists his own age. For the first time, he was hanging out with painters and sculptors. He did not really have an art background yet: his undergraduate degree was in interior design.

Chihuly still speaks of these fellow students, Michael Lawson, Abraham Rothblatt, Andrew Krance — with admiration, they showed him what a life and attitude of an artist could be like. “I was so impressed with the way they looked at things and thought” Chihuly recalled decades later, “From that time on I knew I wanted to be an artist, and that my material would be glass”.
